Following a successful collaboration, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and The Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) have renewed their partnership for another three years. Against a backdrop of conflicts and crises around the world, FAO and EU managers met to cement their alliance on humanitarian issues. 15/09/2021 As part of the observation of the United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation, FAO Deputy Director-General Beth Bechdol participated in a high-level event in support of more inclusive, resilient and sustainable recovery in the Global South  10 September, New York – Organized by the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC), the high-level event served as an opportunity to discuss cooperation and knowledge exchange pathways in favour of countries in the Global South, especially as many are still reeling from the immediate and long-term effects of COVID-19.

In Belize, school meals nourish children and entire communities
FAO and the Mexican Agency for International Development Cooperation (AMEXCID) implemented the Mesoamerica Hunger Free programme, a South-South and Triangular Cooperation (SSTC) initiative. The SSTC framework spurs collaboration between developing countries based on the concept of solidarity, breaking the traditional model of donor and recipient countries. The Hunger Free programme helps national governments implement food and nutrition security and rural development public policies, using a human rights approach and the right to adequate food.

Radio programs give rural communities an opportunity for their voices to be heard. “I know that I am privileged to listen and follow different programmes aired through MVIWATA FM,” says Odilia Jiovin, a farmer from Kilosa District in the Morogoro region of United Republic of Tanzania, which is known for the production and marketing of sunflower, coconut, sugarcane and sisal. “I always take the initiative to share the information with my fellow farmers in our community and apply the knowledge shared through the radio on my farm, where other farmers come and learn too,” she says.

FAO has renewed its partnership agreement with the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM) - Organics International, extending the collaboration until 2024. The partnership, originally formalized in 2018, has provided a framework for working together to develop, promote and strengthen work to improve the livelihoods of populations living in rural areas, in particularly communities and households of smallholder farmers, forest dwellers and fishers and fish workers.
