ROME, ITALY – On the first day of his mandate, Director-General QU conducted a greeting tour of FAO headquarters, which included a visit to the Office of South-South and Triangular Cooperation (OSS). After extending a warm welcome, OSS Director Tang provided DG QU with a brief introduction of the work of OSS since its establishment as a dedicated office in January 2019, highlighting the Tenth Anniversary Event for the FAO-China SSC Programme, which will be held between 25 and 27 November 2019 in Kampala, Uganda.

DG QU expressed his appreciation for the work of OSS, noting the global scale of its initiatives. Remarking on the geographical diversity of OSS staff members, DG QU commented that both South-South and North-South cooperation are important strategic priorities for FAO. Throughout his career, DG QU has served as a longtime leader and supporter of South-South and triangular cooperation. Earlier this year in his candidacy statement, DG QU expressed his vision for the future of South-South cooperation, stating:

“Hand-in-hand development cooperation among the Southern countries should be expanded. Having different strengths in agricultural resources, technology and market development, Southern Countries can complement each other and achieve common development. Existing cooperation should be extended in order to share agricultural development concepts, policy measures, practical technologies, and farmers’ innovations via the FAO South-South Cooperation portals.”

OSS extends its sincere welcome to DG QU and looks forward to supporting his vision to deliver the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
