In collaboration with National Geographic Magazine, FAO has launched an international photo contest that is aiming to draw attention to how and why good nutrition matters – for people and societies.

Coming ahead of the FAO-WHO 2nd International Contest on Nutrition (ICN2), to be held in Rome on 19-21 November, the contest is seeking photos which illustrate two key concepts:

  • Nutrition matters in multiple ways, in developing countries, and in the developed world as well.
  • Good nutrition starts with the farming systems that produce our food, and those farming systems must be geared to produce healthy and sustainable products.

The contest runs until 12:00p.m. Central European Time on 16 October 2014. Anyone 18 or older is eligible to participate.

Selection of winners / prizes

An initial selection of the best 30 submissions will be evaluated by a jury comprised of staff at FAO and National Geographic, based on the following criteria: originality, relevance to the theme, artistic value and communication potential.

Three photos short-listed by the jury will be shared on FAO's Facebook page from the 1st to the 18th of November, where fans will given the opportunity to "like" their favorite – the photo with the most likes will be declared the winner.

First, second and third prize-winners will have the chance to participate in an FAO photography mission to document agricultural development work in the field, and the winning photos will be featured in FAO communications materials.
