The First Triangular Cooperation Project Agreement under the FAO-China SSC Programme Signed to Strengthen Aquaculture Value Chain in Ethiopia

Rome 27/06/2019 - The signing ceremony related to the first Triangular Cooperation Project (Up-scaling the FAO-China South-South Cooperation through Triangular Cooperation with the Netherlands [Part 1]) within the framework of the FAO-China South-South Cooperation (SSC) Programme between the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the People’s Republic of China, and the Kingdom of the Netherlands, took place at FAO headquarters on 27 June 2019. The objective of this Triangular Cooperation project is to boost the aquaculture production and value chain development in Ethiopia.

Mr Roberto Ridolfi, Assistant Director-General (Programme Support and Technical Cooperation) of FAO, His Excellency Niu Dun, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the People’s Republic of China to FAO and His Excellency Johannes Hoogeveen, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to FAO, attended the ceremony and signed the project funding documents for Part I on behalf of the Organization and the respective Governments.

The project is divided into two parts and will be equally funded by the FAO-China SSC Programme and the Government of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. As the first Triangular Cooperation project under the FAO-China SSC Programme, it will strongly advance the partnership among FAO, China, the Netherlands and Ethiopia, hence contributing to the achievement of the UN 2030 Agenda’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). 

Part I of the project will mainly support capacity development of FAO’s Reference Centres in China: the Freshwater Fisheries Research Centre (FFRC) of the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences and the Foreign Economic Cooperation Centre (FECC), both under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. The objective is to enhance FAO Reference Centres’ capacities in international cooperation, including training and research, in the context of climate change and sustainable management of natural resources.  Part II will implement activities that will focus on sustainable aquaculture value chain development in Ethiopia based on the expertise gained from Part I.
