Better use of fish resources in coastal region of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea

With a significant proportion of the coastal population in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’s deriving their livelihood from fishing, aquaculture and other marine activities, the project aimed to strengthen food and nutritional security by strengthening aquaculture (freshwater and marine) as a commercial activity. It achieved this by preparing a long-term development, capacity-building and investment project.

What did the project do

The project prepared a comprehensive five-year master plan (2017–2022) and a USD 34 million investment proposal for building critical infrastructural and technical capacities in the aquaculture sector of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’s. The project document produced under this project considers support to improving aquaculture production and thus strengthening of food security in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. The project, if approved, will make a positive contribution to the aims of the Right to Food Guidelines adopted by FAO in 2004

Impact

The planned project is of crucial economic importance for the country’s future, as, by upgrading the country’s technical capacities and infrastructure in aquaculture, it will improve qualitatively and quantitatively aquaculture production, provide food and export commodities and determine expansion of economic activities and increased food security of the people living in the coastal region.
