FAO and Sida strengthen their longstanding and successful collaboration to achieve global food security

22/06/2017 -

The annual consultation meeting between the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) and FAO took place on Wednesday, 21 May, at FAO Headquarters in Rome. FAO highlighted the valuable support provided by Sida and other Swedish partners to the FAO Programme of Work, particularly to the core funding, humanitarian programmes, and country-level programmes.

FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Department presented the results of the Ocean Conference (5-9 June, 2017, New York), and FAO’s role in enhancing SDG 14 (“Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development”). FAO acknowledged and expressed appreciation for Sida’s pledge, announced at the Ocean Conference, to support FAO’s work in combating illegal fishing, including the Port State Measures Agreement and the Global Record of Fishing Vessels.

FAO Colombia also joined the meeting by videoconference, to share the main outcomes of two land restitution projects funded by the Swedish Cooperation, which are contributing to the implementation of the first point of the 2016 Peace Agreement. “We are really satisfied to discuss project results with FAO country offices” said Mr. Åberg, Senior Policy Adviser of Sida.

FAO looks forward to a closer collaboration with Sida for the implementation of joint and innovative programmes to support food and nutrition security at global and decentralized levels. A new Framework Agreement between FAO and Sida is in the final stages of discussion, and will be signed in the very near future. The Framework Agreement defines the modalities of collaboration between the two entities for unearmarked contributions to the FAO Programme of work, and for human resources contributions, as well as development and emergency and rehabilitation projects and programmes.
