The question of how to better incorporate nutrition into the livestock sector is a challenge shared by many policymakers and programme managers at regional, national and local levels, due to a lack of proven methodological tools setting out how to effectively achieve this. In response to this challenge, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), with support from Action Contre la Faim and World Vision, has developed an innovative stepwise approach that combines theory and practice by establishing a theory of change and associated impact pathways. This work was carried out as part of a consultative process involving expert stakeholders from Eswatini and Zimbabwe. The results obtained demonstrate the utility of this methodological process to help policy makers and technicians formulate and evaluate nutrition sensitive policies, programmes and interventions.

An online advisory and problem-solving service is helping livestock farmers to overcome challenges and increase production in Benin and other parts of West Africa. The private service grew out of a blog written by Louis Agbokou, who works as a livestock advisor at a government agricultural agency in Benin. During on-site visits to farms in the districts that he covered, the livestock engineer became increasingly convinced of the need for wide-ranging technical assistance, to be delivered remotely. The online service that he developed has proved effective in troubleshooting a range of livestock farmers’ problems. Advice is delivered via social media channels, as well as through email communication. The service has proved particularly popular with younger farmers and is provided on a fee-paying basis, while the blog can be accessed free of charge. The initiative shows that even small-scale ICT-based agricultural solutions can be effective, using basic digital tools and resources. The practice is particularly relevant during the COVID-19 pandemic when people are being urged to limit travel and face-to-face encounters.

Respecting free, prior and informed consent is a collective right that belongs to every member of a community. This means that communities have the right to make decisions through their own freely chosen representatives and their institutions, customary or otherwise, such as local authorities and local elected officials. This accompanying guide must be used for training in free, prior and informed consent.

IFAD’s second Biodiversity Advantage report showcases five IFAD projects which highlight the integral importance of biodiversity in agriculture. These projects show how promoting biodiversity improves human and ecosystem health, and the roles of small-scale agricultural producers in preserving and restoring biodiversity and schemes that reward them for their stewardship of healthy natural environments.
