Training, outreach and coordination

  • DivSeek webinars. In collaboration with DivSeek International Network, two webinars have been organized on DOIs and GLIS. The first one on March 17, 2020 was attended by 18 among genebank managers, breeders and documentation specialists. The second one was held on April 27, 2020 and specifically addressed North America and counted 11 participants from the same sectors in the region.   • Stress Tolerant Orphan Legume (STOL) 8th Annual meeting and Training Workshop Istanbul, Turkey, 28-29 January 2020. Promoting orphan legumes under Indian - African collaborative programme  -  The STOL meeting was organised to discuss progress relating to implementation of STOL activities. The meeting was attended by 22 delegates representing ongoing STOL projects in Burkina Faso, Namibia, Ghana, Niger, Kenya, Nigeria, Tanzania, India, Senegal, USA and the Kirkhouse Trust. The training workshop focused on data documentation and data analysis, including the Introduction to DOIs for the Global Information System: GLIS Descriptors.

  • IIX SIRGEAC - Simposio Internacional de Recursos Genéticos para las Américas y el Caribe. Rocha, Uruguay, 08 - 11 December 2019. The International Symposium on Genetic Resources for the Americas and the Caribbean is held for the second time in Uruguay. This event, titled “Agrobiodiversity: Pillar of sustainability",  which has been held every two years since 1997, brings together the largest number of specialists in plant, animal and microorganism genetic resources on the continent.   • CIMMYT. International Conference on Wheat Diversity & Human Health, 22-24 October 2019, Istanbul, Turkey. The conference devoted to the important subject of wheat diversity and its impact on human health. DOIs and GLIS were presented as an effective tool to collect and organize research information associated to wheat genetic resources.

  • International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA). A remote presentation of DOIs and GLIS was delivered during the annual meeting of ICBA held on 18 September 2019 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates

  • Training Workshop on DOIs for Plant Genetic Resources. Embrapa Recursos Genéticos e Biotecnologia (CENARGEN), Brasilia, 5 - 6 September 2019. The objective of the workshop was to support efforts to achieve and maintain excellence in their documentation activities. To achieve this, genebanks must embrace and adopt quality documentation tools and systems through the adoption of international standards such as the Descriptors for DOIs of the Global Information System that address their particular needs. The Workshop brought together more than 50 scientists from six Latin American countries, namely: Brazil, Colombia, Paraguay, Uruguay, Ecuador and Venezuela.

  • Latin America and Caribbean Training Workshop on Conservation, Sustainable Use of PGRFA and Farmers’ Rights - 05/08/2019 to 08/08/2019 - Uruguay (Montevideo). Thanks to the generous funding by the Government of Italy, the Secretariat of the Plant Treaty convened a regional training workshop on the conservation and sustainable use of crop germplasm and Farmers' Rights for countries of Latin America and the Caribbean. Representatives from 14 countries and numerous non-governmental organizations attended the workshop and expressed appreciation for the capacity development initiative.

  • Webinars to BEAN_ADAPT and BRESOV partners. On 3 and 16 July 2019, two webinars were held remotely to present to BEAN_ADAPT and BRESOV project partners the main concepts behind DOIs and GLIS as well as the adoption of SMTAs as the contract to exchange materials within the project. Both BEAN_ADAPT and BRESOV are projects funded by the European Union.   • International Seed Testing Association. ISTA held its 32nd Seed Symposium on 26-28 June, 2019 in Hyderabad, India. The year's theme was Seed Technology and Quality in a Changing World. Held once every three years, the Symposium brings together scientists, technologists and analysts from universities, the seed trade and government, providing an opportunity to discuss recent developments in seed science and foster ideas for the future.   • European Union Horizon 2020. The BRESOV project funded by the European Union held its first annual meeting in Ancona, Italy on 18-20 June 2019. BRESOV aims to tackle the nutritional challenges of a growing world population and changing climatic conditions by enhancing productivity of different vegetable crops in an organic and sustainable farming infrastructure. BRESOV works on broccoli, snap bean and tomato as those staple vegetable crops have significant roles in meeting our global food and nutritional security goal, and under organic conditions can contribute to storing carbon and introducing nitrogen improving organic soil quality. BRESOV partners have agreed to use DOIs to identify the project material. https://www.bresov.eu

  • Indonesian Center for Agricultural Biotechnology and Genetic Resources Research and Development (ICABIOGRAD). "International Conference on Boosting the Big data of Plants with Digital Identifiers", 12-13 June 2019, Bali, Indonesia. The BSF project W3B-PR-29-Indonesia "Multi-country Construction of a Test Platform for the Development and Allocation of Unique Identifiers for Rice Germplasm" focused on testing the GLIS DOI assignation workflow in a multi-country real-world context involving rice collections maintained by institutions in 13 countries of Asia and Africa. The conference was the final act of the project to wrap-up, identify challenges and propose follow-ups.

  • Global Information System Workshop in Tunisia - 06/11/2018 to 08/11/2018 - Tunisia (Tunis, National Genebank). The objective of the workshop was to provide an overview of the Programme of Work on the Global Information System (GLIS) on plant genetic resources for food and agriculture and contribute to the ongoing efforts for the establishment of a regional coordination mechanism for PGRFA documentation and information sharing. The training event was organized in partnership with the National Genebank of Tunisia, the support of the FAO Regional Office for Near East and North Africa in Tunis and thanks to the financial support of the Government of Germany through the project GCP/GLO/685/GER http://www.fao.org/plant-treaty/meetings/meetings-detail/en/c/1158697/

  • Africa - Regional Workshop on the Preparation of the National Reports on the Implementation of the ITPGRFA - 30/10/2018 to 01/11/2018 - Ethiopia (Addis Ababa). The objectives of the workshop are: (i) to enhance the capacity of African national focal points to prepare and submit the national reports on the implementation of the International Treaty; (ii) to provide an overview on the major areas of work and a brief update on the status intersessional processes; (iii) to facilitate discussion and coordination on ongoing policy and operational processes under the International Treaty.   • Indonesian Center for Agricultural Biotechnology and Genetic Resources Research and Development (ICABIOGRAD). “Information System and Exchanges of Genetic Resources for Effective Crop Improvement” workshop at the IPB International Convention Center from 20 to 21 August 2018. Bogor, Indonesia. The training activities, funded by the Benefit-sharing Fund of the International Treaty, will review the experiences in the use of the GLIS Toolkit for the assignation of Digital Object Identifiers to rice material.   • CultiVar and GAIA. COURSE in English. Genome editing in agriculture, engaging in policy, legal and institutional issues (International Thematic School). From 23 to 25 May 2018 in Montpellier, France. This thematic school is free of charge. Please note that CultiVar can provide a couple of PhD students or teachers from developing countries with limited financial support (airfare and/or accommodation).   • GLIS Workshop in Southern African Region. Cape Town, South Africa, 12-14 December 2017. The GLIS Workshop ‘Strengthening national capacities on plant genetic resources in the Plant Genetic Resources Centre of SADC in the context of the Global Information System of Article 17’ Workshop was held in Cape Town on December 2017. The objective of the workshop was to enhance both individual and institutional capacities to document and exchange plant genetic resources in the context of the Global Information System (GLIS) of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture.  It also offered the opportunity for national focal points to discuss and follow up on the main decisions adopted by the Seventh Session of the Governing Body.
