This paper presents a review of participatory plant breeding (PPB) from the perspective of formal sector institutions such as national plant breeding programmes, Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) institutes, or extension services. It includes an inventory of PPB cases worldwide, detailed descriptions of a number of illustrative cases, analysis of key technical and institutional issues, and assessment of gaps in current knowledge regarding PPB methods, organization, and results.
