The Global Mechanism of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification - UNCDD
The Global Mechanism (GM) offers strategic advisory services to developing countries on how to increase investments in sustainable land management (SLM).
Established by the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), the GM began its operations in October 1998. As per art 21 of the Convention, it aims to "increase the effectiveness and efficiency of existing financial mechanisms.” The GM also seeks to attract and channel investments from innovative financial sources such as climate change funds, private sector operations and micro-finance.
The GM works with country Parties to the UNCCD and a broad variety of international and regional partner institutions to enhance their understanding of new financing modalities, and make SLM a priority in the country’s domestic budget allocations.
