Between 4 and 6 October 2019, FAO experts, in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Judicial Training Institute and the Attorney General’s Department, organized and delivered a training in fisheries law and monitoring, control and surveillance (MCS) and enforcement in Pasikuda, off the east coast of Sri Lanka.

During the training workshop, Sri Lankan judges, magistrates and prosecutors were informed of recent developments in international law, in particular, the law of the sea and fisheries law, and received an overview of the practical aspects and challenges of MCS and fisheries law enforcement.

With the help of the Sri Lankan Navy, a field trip to the port of Trincomalee was organized, and this included several demonstrations of boarding at sea and inspection exercises.

The training, funded by the Swedish project “Support for the implementation of the PSMA and related instruments to combat IUU fishing” was a success, and further support is foreseen including through a training of trainers, which could ensure the continuity and sustainability of the capacity development initiatives held so far in Sri Lanka.
