Strategy & Action Plan to support Colombia in the ratification and implementation of the PSMA

27/11/2019

Between 30 September and 4 October 2019, Colombian national institutions and FAO gathered at a workshop in Bogotá, to jointly assess the country’s readiness to proceed with the ratification and implementation of the 2009 FAO Port State Measures Agreement (PSMA).

This multi-stakeholder workshop saw the participation of 37 representatives from various national authorities and led to the development of a strategy and action plan, which will provide the basis for Colombia to strengthen its national legislation, institutional setup, and monitoring, control and surveillance (MCS) systems and operations to be consistent with the provisions of the PSMA and complementary international instruments.

The workshop was carried out under the auspices of FAO's Global Programme to support the implementation of the PSMA and complementary international instruments, in particular through financing from the European Union, and its conclusions and recommendations will inform FAO’s future support to Colombia in enhancing its current efforts to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU fishing).
