Post-2015 shapes up for defining year
A string of events over the last few months of 2014 looks set to give greater form to the post-2015 development agenda, the framework that will succeed the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) at the end of 2015.
The report of the United Nations Open Working Group to the UN General Assembly with proposed Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the UN Secretary-General’s synthesis report of all major post-2015 contributions and a batch of high-profile global conferences in areas closely related to post-2015 discussion will all take place in the final third of the year.
The events will pave the way to intergovernmental negotiations on new goals in 2015, a year already being described as pivotal for global development.
Underlining the focus, the theme of the 69th session of the UNGA between 16 and 29 September in New York is Delivering on and Implementing a Transformative Post-2015 Development Agenda. The General Debate has been pushed back a day to 24 September to accommodate the Climate Summit and World Conference on Indigenous Peoples.
Although the work of the Open Working Group has now ended and the Secretary-General’s stocktaking consultation phase is approaching its conclusion, the voice of civil society and other stakeholders will continue to be heard through a number of events beginning with the 65th Annual UN Department of Public Information (DPI)/ Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) Conference in New York.
FAO, which co-hosts the Second International Conference on Nutrition (ICN2) with the World Health Organization (WHO) in Rome, will stage the 41st session of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) – a multistakeholder international and intergovernmental platform - in which post-2015 is likely to be a recurrent theme.
