Promoting Agricultural Diversification to Reduce Poverty, Fight Malnutrition and Enhance Youth Employment Opportunities in Eastern Africa

Country Rwanda
Year 2017
The Africa Solidarity Trust Fund ( ASTF) project was launched in November 2014 in Rwanda to address the Poultry production value chain with the purpose of creating job opportunities for youth and to improve nutrition and provide supplemental income to poor households through poultry value chains. Areas of intervention are Bugesera in the Eastern Province, Gakenke in the Northern Province, Gisagara and Ruhango districts in the Southern Province. The project has directly supported 225 beneficiaries including 25 rural youth (10 women and 15 men) that were unemployed or underemployed in the age cohorts 18-35 years and 200 rural vulnerable households mainly women-headed to establish poultry farm units for egg production. Youth under the project have engaged in decent jobs. FAO gave them hatcheries therefore they incubate one day chicks that were rather imported. They wholesale eggs to major markets in Rwanda.
