Guidelines on phytosanitary procedures for area-wide management of fruit fly pests 2024
    Also available in:

This guideline describes the most widely used classic and modern phytosanitary procedures for the management of fruit flies that infest fruits and vegetables and that are of quarantine and economic importance, specifically species of the genera Anastrepha, Bactrocera, Ceratitis, Dacus, Rhagoletis and Zeugodacus. Pest management can be aimed at the native species of fruit flies or to prevent the introduction, establishment and spread of non-native species. This document is the first comprehensive guideline developed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the united Nations (FAO) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for area-wide fruit fly pest management including area-wide suppression, containment, eradication, and exclusion strategies. It is a much-needed complement to the already published FAO/IAEA guidelines for fruit fly survey “Trapping Guidelines for Area-wide Fruit Fly Programmes” and “Fruit Sampling Guidelines for Area-Wide Fruit Fly Programmes”.

Trapping guidelines for area-wide fruit fly programmes

These Trapping Guidelines for Fruit Flies of Economic Importance provide strategic guidance and direction on where and how to implement surveys in support of fruit fly control and quarantine activities. This document is the summation of recommendations put forth by a multi-national group of fruit fly workers that has the objective of providing objective information on fruit fly survey tools to NPPOs and industry in FAO and IAEA Member States. These Trapping Guidelines are to be considered as a ‘working’ document to be regularly updated as survey techniques continue to improve and experience in fruit fly control programmes evolves.

Guidelines for the Use of Mathematics in Operational Area-Wide Integrated Pest Management Programmes Using the Sterile Insect Technique with a Special Focus on Tephritid Fruit Flies 2016
    Also available in:
    No results found.

This guideline will assist managers in the use of mathematics in area-wide Integrated Pest Management (AW-IPM) programmes using the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT). It describes mathematical tools that can be used at different stages of suppression/eradication programmes. It provides simple methods for calculating the various quantities of sterile insects required so that more realistic sterile: fertile rates to suppress pest populations can be achieved. On the other hand, most SIT programmes ha ve information systems based on GIS that produces reliable profiles of historic information. Based on the results of past activities they describe what has happened in the last weeks but barely explain what is expected in the following weeks. With the help of this guideline current AW-IPM progammes can use that historic information to develop predictive models for their particular conditions to better plan control measures.
