Synopsis (short abstract) The Regional Knowledge Exchange on the promotion of efficient rice farming practices and value chains in sub-Saharan Africa took place from 7 to 11 August 2017 in Elmina, Ghana. The workshop brought together over 40 participants from ten countries and technical partner institutions involved in the implementation of the regional project “Partnership for Sustainable Rice Systems Development in Sub-Saharan Africa’’ (GCP/RAF/489/VEN). The key objectives of the workshop were primarily (1) to discuss priorities and plans for continued project implementation at country and at regional level, and (2) to facilitate the regional exchange of knowledge and experiences on sustainable rice production intensification and rice value chain. As a result of workshop discussion, a number of proposals were put forward for study tour exchanges to disseminate best practices on rice value chain development. These include exchange on seed systems, irrigation, post-harvest losses and mechanization. Study tours would be coordinated with regional and global research institutions such as Africa Rice and International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in collaboration with FAO. It is envisaged that the knowledge exchange will provide a catalyst for the dissemination of best practices in Africa along the rice value chains through the practical adoption of innovative tools and approaches to boost productivity and enhance competitiveness of African rice farmers, processors and traders.

    The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) organized a regional rice policy workshop, Exchange of Experience on Successful Rice Sector Development Policies in Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia, in Dar es Salaam, United Republic of Tanzania, from 24 to 26 October 2022. The workshop aimed to facilitate the exchange of policy and institutional experiences in developing rice value chains among selected countries in Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. It was intended to begin cooperation among institutions in the two continents to promote a sustainable, innovative, inclusive, and efficient rice value chain in sub-Saharan Africa. This report presents the themes, topics and recommendations discussed. The workshop gathered 30 policymakers and technical experts from Benin, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Mali, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Uganda, India, the Republic of Korea, Thailand, Viet Nam, AfricaRice, the Coalition for Africa's Rice Development (CARD), the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), the Rice Observatory of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Common Market for East and Southern Africa (COMESA), and the East African Community (EAC).

    A total of 33 participants (10 women) participated in the Regional Rice Initiative – Workshop cum Study Tour on knowledge exchange on Farmer Field School curriculum development for promotion of efficient rice farming practices and value chains. Field visits were made to Sleman (Rice-Fish farming and “jajar legowo”) and Boyalali (organic rice value chains) organized by FAO Indonesia in collaboration with the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries and the international civil society organization Vredeseilanden (VECO) and its local partner CSO Aliansi Petani Padi Organik Boyolali (APOLLI). Following the study tour, the regional workshop was held to: (1) facilitate the regional exchange of knowledge and experiences on sustainable intensification of rice production, including Rice-Fish farming systems and rice value chains; and (2) take stock of Farmer Field School curricula currently available, introduce the FFS Guidance Document and identify opportunities for strengthening of the FFS cu rricula. The participants included representatives from government and civil society organization implementing partners and principal investigators engaged in results assessment in pilot RRI-Phase 2 countries (Indonesia, Lao PDR and Philippines). Results of the assessment studies will be communicated to national and local government for informing policy and for mobilization of funding support for up-scaling of the RRI Farmers Field Schools on Save and Grow-Sustainable Intensification of Rice Pro duction.

    Creating Partnerships for Sustainable Rice Systems in Sub-Saharan Africa through South-South Cooperation - GCP/RAF/489/VEN 2021

    Rice consumption in Africa has grown exponentially in recent decades; however, most African countries are not self-sufficient in rice production. In sub-Saharan Africa, it is strongly believed that rice yields could be increased through a holistic strengthening of rice value chains. By increasing and improving production, countries would therefore be empowered to meet consumer demand for rice. This project was formulated in the context of South-South Cooperation (SSC) to contribute to the development of sustainable rice systems in sub-Saharan Africa by creating and leveraging partnerships between international, national and local actors from both the public and private sectors. Elements of its design included the promotion and production of the seeds of improved rice varieties, the improvement of post-harvest techniques among local farmers, and the identification, dissemination and adoption of good agricultural practices (GAPs) and effective rice production technologies.
