Thematic Knowledge Networks Many individuals and organizations working in rural development conduct their activities in relative isolation, with little input or coordination from others who share similar goals. Networks of organizations or individuals are established to break down this isolation and to foster dialogue, knowledge exchange and collective action, normally within a specific subject or theme and often across wide geographic areas. Such thematic networks increasingly operate through email using tools such as discussion groups, or on the web using tools such as online bulletin boards. In addition to the examples at right, the ICD Communities of Practice featured on this site are examples of knowledge networks focused specifically on ICD. The Programme is developing information and communication for development (ICD) principles applicable to such networks. In 2006, FAO will release an e-learning module under its Information Management Resource Kit (IMARK) initiative focusing specifically on the creation of these networks. The module will be available free of charge on CD and online. Users are encouraged to submit examples of thematic knowledge networks with which they are involved, to be featured as case studies on this site. |
