About the report "Peatland mapping and monitoring: recommendations and technical overview":

This state of the art report offers an overview of existing tools, methodologies and case studies to support countries with their peatland mapping and monitoring. The 35 expert authors from 14 countries stress the need for continuous and cost-effective peatland mapping and monitoring to maintain and prevent degradation of this important carbon storage in all regions. Contributions of authors from major tropical peatland countries such as Indonesia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Peru demonstrate the urgent need to map and monitor these vulnerable ecosystems for climate and biodiversity action.

About the SEPAL module for monitoring tropical peatland restoration:

Responding to Indonesia’s urgent need to monitor remote peatland areas, FAO has developed free, cloud-based modules for monitoring moisture and restoration actions in peatlands. These tools are integrated into the online platforms SEPAL and Collect Earth Online (CEO), which allow free and open access to geospatial data and processing power. By using supercomputing and the latest satellite imagery, SEPAL can track soil moisture levels on peatland, an important indicator of the health of the peatland. Indonesian national institutions are already taking advantage of the tools to coordinate, assess and demonstrate the results, and refine the restoration action.
