Forests are essential in achieving almost all SDGs, particularly in Bangladesh where forests play a critical role in reducing the impacts of natural disasters on people’s livelihoods and the national economy in general. In 2015, Bangladesh Forest Department with technical support from FAO and SilvaCarbon and financial support from the USAID, launched the Bangladesh Forest Inventory (BFI), which aims to be a permanent process of national tree and forest inventory and monitoring. Covering the biophysical and socio-economical aspects of tree and forests in Bangladesh, the Bangladesh Forest Inventory contributes to National plans and strategies (7th Five year Workplan, LDN, REDD+), as well as Country Investment Plan (CIP) in the Environment Forestry and Climate Change (EFCC) sectors.

The BFI process is a combination of biophysical and socio-economic data that integrates field, GIS and RS technologies in the design, mapping, survey and reporting phases. The first BFI cycle was implemented in November 2016 to April 2019 with a view to establishing a National Forest Inventory and Satellite Land Monitoring System for improved forest and natural resources management as well as to providing annual estimates of tree and forest resources and is designed to be updated in future cycles.

Under its first cycle, the BFI has achieved several major deliverables, including the BFI Report, the Land Representation System of Bangladesh (LRSB), the Bangladesh Land Cover Map 2015, and the Data Sharing Policy for Bangladesh Forest Department. These are crucial to support planning interventions and investment in the Environment, Forest and Climate Change sectors as well as Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and indicators for national plans. The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has already approved Bangladesh Forest Inventory report. To communicate the results and products of the BFI to stakeholders and others interested, FD and FAO will jointly host a webinar event with guidance from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. A webinar event will facilitate quick dissemination of the materials and is a better option than a physical event given the COVID situation. A physical event will be organized later when the situation improves.

Objective

The objective of the webinar is to highlight the work of the Forest Department, present the major results and products of the BFI, and share knowledge of the BFI process to national forest monitoring practitioners in South-East Asia. To ensure maximum participation, a complete list of 2 colleagues and partners involved with the BFI will be invited (e.g. including field teams, analysts, government officials, development partners) as well as any organizations who may potentially benefit from the new information (e.g. forest departments from different countries).
