21-22 November, Brussels - Experts from FAO’s Strategic Programme on Rural Poverty Reduction, including Strategic Programme Leader Benjamin Davis and Programme Officer Ana Paula de la O Campos, met with the Directorates-General for International Cooperation and Development of the European Commission to explore future collaborations and discuss how best to support countries to achieve the 2030 Agenda.

The FAO experts and representatives of the Directorates-General for International Cooperation and Development of the European discussed common areas of action and explored partnership opportunities between the EU and FAO’s Strategic Programme on Rural Poverty Reduction to address poverty and inequalities, strengthen policy and programme coherence and increase the impact of contributions to SDGs 1 and 2 at national level.

Particular focus was given to FAO’s role in supporting member countries to achieve SDGs 1 and 2, as well as FAO’s Framework on Rural Extreme Poverty, which was presented at a DEVCO External Cooperation InfoPoint on 22 November.

The event built on the findings of the 2019 SOFI and FAO’s recently launched Framework, with the experts shedding light on the global state of hunger and extreme rural poverty as well as the prospects for their eradication. The experts also highlighted the linkages between food security and nutrition, poverty reduction and inequality. The event closed with a discussion on how best to support countries in reaching SDG 1.1 (by 2030, eradicate extreme poverty for all people everywhere, currently measured as people living on less than $1.25 a day), using the new Framework.
