Extreme poverty

With around 783 million people still living in extreme poverty, the world needs to address the structural root causes and severe vulnerabilities that affect the poorest in order to meet SDG1 (No poverty). Understanding who has been left behind by the recent progress in poverty reduction and identifying the constraints they face is the very first step for countries to be able to end extreme poverty by 2030.

FAO supports countries to identify who the extreme poor are, where they live and what specific constraints prevent them from escaping the poverty trap. FAO also works to strengthen countries’ capacity to use poverty analysis as a basis for policy formulation.

Because agriculture can be more effective to reduce poverty than other sectors, particularly in LDCs, FAO helps countries harvest the opportunities that the agriculture and food systems offer to lift people out of poverty.

Analytical support is combined with policy advice and technical support to design multi-sectoral strategies, policies and plans to end poverty and foster rural development that reach the poorest and are tailored to their needs. In view of that, FAO facilitates inter-ministerial collaboration and multi-stakeholder dialogues to exchange best practices on poverty reduction.
