Indigenous peoples

There are more than 370 million indigenous peoples in some 90 countries around the world. Indigenous people make relevant contributions to the world´s heritage thanks to their traditional knowledge and understanding of ecosystem management. Yet, they are among the most vulnerable, marginalized and disadvantaged groups in the world. Although they account for less than 5 per cent of the global population, they make up about 15 per cent of all the poor people in the world. FAO works hand-in-hand with indigenous peoples to end poverty and hunger, to make sure their rights are respected, they are involved in policy and decision making processes that affect their lives, and participate and benefit from development process.
