Due to a stocking of silver carp in the 1970s to slow down the process of eutrophication, the current silver carp population in Lake Balaton has reached such a level that it threatens the lake’s ecosystem. There does not seem to be natural predators to regulate the population and artificial catch has not been able to exceed the natural growth. If not controlled, this can lead to an ecological disaster, because the majority of the fishes are in an age where they will die soon, negatively impacting on the national tourist industry and causing significant loss of income also for the local communities. There is therefore a need to bring the population down to the desirable level between 1 000-1 500 tonnes and to regulate the population of this artificial introduced species. However, the fishing techniques used so far are not appropriate to reduce significantly the population of silver carps. Because of the lack of specific technical knowledge and non-existence of national research institutions dealing with capture technologies, Hungary will not be able to solve the problem with its own capacities.
The objective of the project is to support the introduction of modern environmentally friendly silver carp capture technologies.
