This review is presented as a Farm Management and Production Economics Service working paper hoping that it will, by building up on evolving concepts of sustainability and previous FAO work on farming systems analysis, provide a basis for the Sustainable Farming Systems component of Central and Eastern Sustainable Agriculture (CEESA)1 project, and contribute to better understanding of the processes and needs for development of sustainable farming systems in Central and Eastern Europe. Any suggestions may be addressed to: FAO Subregional Office for Central and Eastern Europe

1 Financed by the Fifth Framework Programme of the EC, the CEESA project was developed by the Humboldt University of Berlin in cooperation with FAO. CEESA is also a network with both research and information/advocacy functions which serves as a forum for exchange of views, knowledge and results on sustainable agricultural development among specialists from the EU and the CEE countries as well as decision and policy makers of twelve CEE countries: Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Ukraine. The FAO contribution has been essential for setting up the CEESA network and instrumental for developing the CEESA project concept. The general objective of the CEESA project is: "By the year 2002, concepts including recommendations for the successful transition of the agricultural sectors in Central and Eastern European Countries (CEECs) towards sustainability will be developed, presented to decision makers, discussed with them and published".
