The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture |
The report provides an overview of developments in world fisheries and aquaculture, followed by a review of issues confronting fishers and fish farmers, and a presentation of seven in-depth studies undertaken by FAO. The report concludes with some thoughts on the future of fisheries and aquaculture, from both short-term and longer-term perspectives.
Developments registered during the past two years confirm the trends already observed at the end of the 1990s: capture fisheries production is stagnating, aquaculture output is expanding and there are growing concerns with regard to the livelihoods of fishers and the sustainability of commercial catches and the aquatic ecosystems from which they are extracted .

The second version of The World Fisheries and Aquaculture Atlas presents a comprehensive and global view of both capture and aquaculture fisheries. It covers all aspects of fisheries, with information on development, ecosystems, research, statistics, technology, trade and utilization. It also identifies the broad range of policy and other strategies affecting fisheries, describing actions required or already taken and the outlook for the future. Furthermore, it contains over 300 original articles and hundreds of images, graphs, maps and tables, besides links to other documents and Web sites, providing a network of easily accessible and updated material.

Special Programme for Food Security |
