Qué es Telefood
Mensaje del Director General
In its third year of existence, the battle to end hunger in the world continues, with TeleFood '99 - the global campaign to rise public awareness of the problem of world hunger and to give hope to the hungry.

TeleFood has received a generous response to its call throughout the international community providing more than just hope to some of the more than 800 million people in the world who suffer from chronic undernutrition. Contributions whether big or small, were donated from around the globe, and summed up more than US$ 4 million, financing more than 300 projects in 95 countries. Every dollar donated is being used to fund small grassroots development projects benefiting directly the rural poor, specially women, in over 110 countries.

TeleFood was born after world leaders gathered at the World Food Summit, held at the FAO Headquarters in Rome in November 1996. They recognized that freeing millions of souls from lives of poverty and malnutrition was a task too great for governments alone. The concerted effort of all sectors of society was needed to confront the ordeal. Since then, TeleFood has initiated a global solidarity movement, uniting government and non-governmental organizations, civil society and the private sector, all committed to a single goal: "Food for All".

The activities of TeleFood '99 are related to World Food Day, which takes place the 16 October, anniversary date of the foundation of FAO in 1945, and will go on through mid December. "Youth against hunger" is the theme of World Food Day this year.

The highlight of TeleFood '99 is a three hour gala concert featuring outstanding artists from around the world such as U-2; Eric Clapton; Jimmy Cliff; Gilberto Gil; Paul Simon; Stevie Wonder; Simply Red; Whitney Houston, and many more. The event will be broadcast on 4 December from James Bond Beach, Jamaica .

The megaconcert, will be available to a worldwide audience of more than 500 million people through the services of Intelsat and PanAmSat, spreading not only music, but also and most important, the message of solidarity and the common struggle which we have undertaken to put an end to world hunger.
