Training South Sudan’s fisheries officers in fisheries and aquaculture emergency response


Due to its location along the Nile River Basins and other rivers, and within the biggest wetland in the world, South Sudan has very rich and vibrant fisheries. If well managed and sustainably harvested, fisheries can be an important contributor to food security and nutrition in the country.

National capacity to respond and plan for fisheries is, however, limited. In response to this, FAO South Sudan in collaboration with the national Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries Industry (MLFI) conducted a training workshop on fisheries and aquaculture emergency response in Juba, for fisheries officers from all ten states. The training workshop was a planned outcome and follow up to the Training of Trainers (ToT) in Fisheries and Aquaculture Response Guidance held in Fiuggi, Italy in March 2015.

The aim of the workshop was to develop South Sudanese fisheries extension officers’ capacity to efficiently respond and support the development of appropriate interventions in fisheries and aquaculture. The 18 participants were selected by the Directorate of Fisheries and Aquaculture (DF) under the MLFI and by FAO South Sudan, and included 13 fisheries extension officers and five staff from FAO’s implementing partners.

By providing information and guidance on best practices in emergency response in fisheries and aquaculture, including best practices in fisheries post-harvest and fisheries management, the workshop was successful in strengthening participants’ skills. The attendees of the workshop were distributed a set of guiding documents and tools, including the Fisheries and Aquaculture Emergency Response Guidance and the Guidelines for the Fisheries and Aquaculture Sector on Damage and Needs Assessments in Emergencies.

Ability to plan for and respond to emergencies is vital to save the lives and livelihoods of people in the fisheries and aquaculture sector. Following the training, participants recommended that the workshop be repeated and extended to more fisheries officers.
