FAO distributed fresh food to 3 000 IDPs located in Gubio and New Stadium camps, in and around Maiduguri, Borno State. A significant portion of the households were displaced at the start of the year when violence broke out across local government areas (LGAs) in northern Borno. Residents were then moved to camps in Maiduguri and remain dependent on food assistance, most of which is cereal based.
The fresh food vouchers allowed households to redeem NGN 8 100 (USD 23) of foods including eggs, sweet potatoes, onions, tomatoes, okra and other vegetables. The distributions will also stimulate smallholder market participation as produce were primarily sourced from FAO-supported dry season farmers.
