Reviving spate irrigation in Somaliland

Feb 2020

In response to poor agricultural production in Somalia, the European Union provided Eur 2 million to FAO in order to strengthen the resilience of target communities, in close collaboration with Somaliland's ministry of Agricultural Development, through this "Reviving spate irrigation in Somaliland" project.

In districts like Burao and Gebley, where agriculture is the main livelihood, farming communities are vulnerable to ever-increasing shocks such as flash floods and drought. Scant, highly unreliable, and often destructive, water resources coupled with limited knowledge on famring technologies, especially on plant pest and disease management, have regulalrly resulted in poor yields and compromised food security.
