The International Year of Rice (IYR) has officially ended. On behalf of all those who helped organize and coordinate IYR 2004, we extend our sincere thanks to the many governments, farmers' organizations, educational institutions, private sector enterprises and ordinary citizens who participated in this extrordinary celebration of the world's most important food crop. The success of IYR 2004 has given new impetus to efforts to develop sustainable rice-based systems that will reduce hunger and poverty, and contribute to environ-
mental conservation and a better life for present and future generations.
