INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF RICE
INTERNATIONAL AWARD FOR BEST SCIENTIFIC ARTICLES
FAO and the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) have announced the winners of the IYR International Award for Best Scientific Articles. For the award, FAO and IRRI invited rice researchers to nominate scientific articles focused on research related to rice crop management (rice agronomy) and rice crop improvement (rice breeding). Such articles were to have been published in a scientific journal since September 1998 in any of the five official languages of FAO (Arabic, Chinese, English, French and Spanish).
The award judges recognized the following for their contribution to the advancement of rice research:
Dr Youyong Zhu, President of Yunnan Agricultural University in China. The paper by Dr Youyong Zhu and his research team working on "Genetic diversity and disease control in rice" has been awarded first prize in the rice agronomy category.
- Dr Takuji Sasaki, Director of the Genome Research Department at the National Institute of Agrobiological Sciences (NIAS) in Japan. The article by Dr Takuji Sasaki and his team working on "The genome sequence and structure of rice chromosome 1" has been awarded first prize in the rice breeding category.
Dr Zhu and Dr Sasaki accepted their prize medals on behalf of their research and writing teams at FAO headquarters in Rome on 14 October 2004.
