The right to food is now explicitly recognised in the Brazilian Constitution. After being approved by both chambers of the Congress on the 3 of February 2010, the Brazilians adopted the Constitutional Amendment Project (PEC 47/2003) which now establishes the right to food as a constitutional human right. The amendment aimed at including the right to food among other social rights that were already part of article 6 of the Brazilian Constitution and that are equally important for living a dignified live.

The 2009 World Food Summit arrived to an end after three days of discussions in which a large variety of stakeholders addressed key issues for the realization of the right to food. While the Plenary Hall witnessed the statements of delegates and international organizations, the round tables were the occasion to debate crucial issues such as climate change, fair trade rules (particularly the Doha Round) and special measures to address global food governance, including the current reform of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS). In the meanwhile, a side event of a wide array of Social Movements, NGOs and CSOs also took place.

Following the launch of the Toolbox held on 15th October, the Expert Panel on “The Role of the Right to Food in Addressing the Global Food Crisis” brought together the views of economists, policy makers, human rights experts and academia to discuss about the most important issues and challenges of the current food crisis. Chaired by the Assistant Director-General of the Economic and Social Development, Mr Hafez Ghanem, the panellists answered specific questions regarding the role of human rights in addressing hunger.

The 2009 World Food Week hosted two important events in which the right to food was at the centre of the discussions relating the current crisis. On October 15th, Mr. Jacques Diouf, Director General of FAO, Mr. Hafez Ghanem, Assistant Director-General of the Economic and Social Department and Ms. Barbara Ekwall, team leader of the right to food, launched the Right to Food Methodological Toolbox: a practical publication containing six volumes covering a wide range of topics such as assessment, legislation, education, budgeting and monitoring in order to implement the right to adequate food at national level.

Un conjunto de seis publicaciones ofrece directrices a gobiernos y la sociedad civil. 23 de octubre de 2009, Roma – La FAO ha publicado una "caja de herramientas metodológicas" sobre el Derecho a la Alimentación destinada a ofrecer a los países, instituciones de la sociedad civil y otras partes interesadas, una serie de instrumentos eficaces que puedan usar para reafirmar el derecho a una alimentación adecuada como uno de los derechos humanos básicos.

El Panel de Expertos “El rol del Derecho a la Alimentación en abordar la crisis mundial de la alimentación” es coherente con el tema de la Semana Mundial de la Alimentación, “Lograr la seguridad alimentaria en tiempos de crisis” y es una buena oportunidad para reflexionar antes del evento de la FAO en noviembre, la Cumbre Mundial de la Alimentación.

Visualizada como una de las mayores contribuciones de la FAO al derecho humano de la alimentación según las Directrices del Derecho a la Alimentación, la “Caja de Herramientas Metodológicas sobre el Derecho a la Alimentación” proporciona una ayuda práctica para la implementación de las Directrices Voluntarias en ayuda de la realización progresiva del derecho a la alimentación adecuada en el contexto de seguridad alimentaria nacional.

On 25 September, the Supreme Court of Nepal issued an interim order according to which the Government of Nepal has to supply immediately food to 32 food-short districts. “Interim order” refers to orders that remain applicable for the duration of the case. The Court found immediate action necessary because of over three million people suffering from food scarcity.
