FAO celebrates Human Rights Day 2013

Human Rights Day is held on 10 December every year, the date the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, proclaiming its principles as the “common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations.”

This year has a special significance: it marks the 20th anniversary of the Office of the High Commissioner of Human Rights. For the occasion, the Right to Food Team at FAO is happy to launch the following publications and tools which can help further the progressive realization of the right to food. These tools address specific needs and themes related to the right to food and can be used by a wide range of partners, human rights workers and professionals, governments, organizations and individuals.

Right to Food Handbooks

The “Right to Food Handbook” series is a collection of 10 publications, prepared in collaboration with PROSALUS, based on the different volumes of the Right to Food Methodological Toolbox.
Each publication provides practical information and guidance on how to implement the right to food and apply human rights-based approaches to key areas of work, namely, legislation, monitoring, assessment, budget and education.

The Global Strategic Framework for Food Security and Nutrition (GSF) requires all stakeholders to implement and ensure the coherence of policies with regard to the right to adequate food. This publication documents the most important elements from the GSF that support and illustrate the above statement and offers important suggestions to stakeholders on how to translate this global consensus into practice at the national level.

CARICOM AssessmentThe Right to Food in the CARICOM Region
– An Assessment Report

This publication presents coherent and systematic information and analysis about: the current food and nutrition security situation in the CARICOM Region and in CARICOM Member States, and the relevant legal, policy and institutional environments in the Region with respect to the protection and realization of the right to food. The information and analysis are expected to translate into concrete follow up actions and can serve to monitor over time right to food conditions in the Region.

Guidance NoteGuidance Note: Integrating the Right to Adequate Food into food and nutrition security programmes

This Guidance Note is a practical tool for practitioners to integrate the right to food into food and nutrition security (FNS) programmes. It explains key concepts related to the right to food and, particularly, examines four main entry points for FSN programmes: responsibilities of stakeholders, legal aspects, monitoring, and claims mechanisms.

RTF GuidelinesRight to Food Guidelines

Adopted by the 127th Session of the FAO Council, November 2004

Russian and Nepalese versions now available.

The objective of the Right to Food Guidelines is to provide practical guidance to States in their implementation of the progressive realization of the right to adequate food in the context of national food security.
