News - 12.02.2014

The first Train-the-Trainers workshop that took place in Guatemala from the 30 September to 4 October 2013, aimed to leave installed a training capacity in Central America for continued right-to-food training activities among different actors by the central americans themselves.

This workshop was the last in a series of three right to food workshops organized and facilitated by the Right to Food Team in direct collaboration with the Regional Food and Nutrition Security Programme (PRESANCA) of the Central American Integration System (SICA).

The first two workshops were focused more on the practical meaning of the Right to Food and they were part of the training curriculum in food and nutrition security in Central America offered by PRESANCA II. The first one (May 2012) was included in the Master’s Degree Programme in Food and Nutrition Security and Rural Development, and the second one (September 2012) in the Diploma Course in Food and Nutrition Security and Local Development for municipal level staff.

The main purpose of the Train-the-Trainers workshopwas to contribute to strengthening the capacity of a core group of Central American trainers to continue to provide right to food training to governmental and non-governmental staff at national and local level.
The specific objectives of the workshop focus on:

  • Providing an understanding of the policy, programme, legal and institutional environment in Central America for the right to food;
  • How to apply methodological tools to integrate the right to food in national and regional policies and programmes;
  • Learning how to organize and deliver right to food training exercises for actors in food and nutrition security fields;
  • Providing inputs for the development of training tools.

During the workshop, that took place in Guatemala (30 September - 4 October 2013), the participants were also asked to evaluate a set of the “Right to Food Handbooks”, a collection of 10 publications based on the different volumes of the Right to Food Methodological Toolbox. Each publication provides practical information and guidance on how to implement the right to food and apply human rights-based approaches to key areas of work such as: legislation, monitoring, assessment, budgeting and capacity strengthening.
