28th Regular Session Human Rights Council

During the 28th Session of the Human Rights Council (1–28 March 2015) a lot of issues and debates related to the right to food had been discussed.

In particular, Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) invited FAO to join the Annual Discussions on Climate Change, on a special panel aimed at linking climate change and impacts on the right to food. FAO's intervention covered direct and indirect impacts of climate change on the right to food, highlighting important data and noting important achievements in the past decade. FAO also highlighted the importance of strengthening comprehensive, nationally owned and context-sensitive social protection systems and the comments were well received by Member States. The Panel also had the presence of the Prime Minister of Tuvalu, a Government Officer from the Philippines, La Via Campesina, World Churches Council and FIAN.

On Monday 9 March 2015, the Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, Ms. Hilal Elver, presented her first annual report, focused on the legal obstacles faced in the achievement of the right to food, as well as examples on good practices as a means of encouraging States to develop judicial remedies in accordance with the Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.
