Right to Food Guideline 3.1: “States, as appropriate and in consultation with relevant stakeholders and pursuant to their national laws, should consider adopting a national human- rights based strategy for the progressive realization of the right to adequate food in the context of national food security as part of an overarching national development strategy, including poverty reduction strategies, where they exist.”
The Right to Food Guideline No. 3 recommends the adoption of a national right to food strategy. Such strategy can help to address the miscellaneous reasons for hunger and malnutrition and articulate the value added of implementing the right to food into national policies, programmes and legislation. A sound right to food strategy will help to promote awareness, empowerment and participation within the country and enhance the consultation and interaction between the government and civil society organizations.
Many countries have already adopted right to food or food security strategies; others are on their way to do so. The FAO Right to Food team started to collect existing national strategies.
In the overview below you will find a collection of those national strategies we have gathered so far (sorted by country). National strategies, which directly promote and refer to the right to food are indicated with a ; those which indirectly relate to the right to food through fostering food security, human rights, hunger reduction as well as the right to life and the right to health are indicated with a .
This list of national strategies is the first step to develop a comprehensive database on right to food strategies. It is far from being complete and we see it as a “living” instrument which will be updated continuously. Therefore, please let us know if there are further right to food strategies in place or if the strategies we list here have already been revised or newly issued. We are appreciating every type of feedback and are looking forward to receiving your comments and inputs. You con contact us directly per email under: righttofood@fao.org.
