Collaboration with the Forestry Department
One of the objectives of the Right to Food Unit is to integrate the right to food approach into FAO’s regular activities and all sectoral areas.
The Forestry Department and the Right to Food Unit are currently exploring concrete ways and means of collaboration by planning joint Right to Food and Forestry activities. The main objective is to support member countries through forestry in achieving human rights-based food security.
As a first step, we have identified the following four thematic clusters – based on themes, geographical and opportunities criteria – in order to explore and facilitate the integration of right to food principles into the work of the Forestry Department (http://www.fao.org/forestry/home/en/):
a) intersectoral linkages, b) legal framework, c) non-wood forest products, d) policy and institutions.
National Forest Programme Facility
The Facility was established in 2002 as a response to intergovernmental dialogue and resolutions on forests, which have recognized the important role that national forest programmes (nfps) play in addressing forestry sector issues.
Facility's trademark is to stimulate participation in the nfp process by providing grants directly to stakeholders in partner countries. It also serves as a comprehensive information service on nfps worldwide. The overall objective of the facility is to assist countries in developing and implementing nfps that effectively address local needs and national priorities, and reflect internationally agreed principles. Informed and broad participation is the key to achieving this objective.
