| The Right to Food in 2000 and beyond |
| This paper looks at the evolving process to further explore the human right to food as a framework in which to strengthen the efforts toward food security and to do so as part of the broader promotion of human rights in general. Within this overall scope the specific purpose of the paper is to look into the role and opportunities for FAO to be a vigilant actor in advancing this process. This paper reviews the events sparked by the Summit and the role of FAO in its follow-up - to date and potentially in the first decade of the new century and beyond. But while FAO can and is indeed expected by many to be a key promoter of the right to food as a human right its role cannot be discussed in isolation from FAO also being a partner in the wider international community of actors in pursuit of this and related rights. The paper thus provides ideas both for specific action by FAO in advising and assisting interested Member States that wish to embark on a right-based approach to food security and for modalities that may be explored within a wider partnership with UN and other agencies and organisations. |
