| Seminar on the Right to Food: A Challenge for Peace and Development in the 21rst Century Rome 17-19 September 2001 | |
| Achievements on the Right to Food in International Human Rights Law |
| The Seminar concludes that after five years of intensive work carried out by different actors and partners the international community has achieved a better understanding of the human right to adequate food. It has been firmly established in international law. In particular Article 11 of the ICESCR supplemented by the CESCR's General Comment 12 provides with a clear definition of the right to adequate food and to be free from hunger. It also sets the international obligations that the States Parties to the Covenant shall comply with in addition to those of the international organizations. Finally practical measures of national implementation have been established including drafting framework legislation as well as setting benchmarks monitoring mechanisms and appropriate remedies. |
