Bolivia developed the National Programme on Complementary School Feeding 2015–2020 to implement food sovereignty and Living Well (Vivir Bien)

The new Law on School Feeding of the Plurinational State of Bolivia, adopted in December 2014, aims to ensure the human right to adequate food, to strengthen the development of local production and increase school attendance rates. The Law n. 622 represents a step forward in the development of food sovereignty and the Living Well (Vivir Bien).

The South Asia Right to Food Conference ends with the elaboration of Dhaka Declaration

More than 2000 participants (from the governments, civil society, NGOs and International organizations) six countries from South Asia (Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Myanmar and Bhutan) were gathered from May 30th till June 1st 2015 for the first South Asia right to food conference, held in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Review of the legislative framework and jurisprudence concerning the right to adequate food in Nepal

Now also available in Nepalese.
[10.10.2014] The FAO Right to Food Team, in collaboration with the FAO Development Law Branch and Office in Nepal, is pleased to announce the launch of the Review of the legislative framework and jurisprudence concerning the right to adequate food in Nepal. The review discusses overarching aspects of Nepalese law and jurisprudence dealing with this human right. It provides a critical assessment of constitutional as well as legislative provisions and offers a thorough analysis of Supreme Court jurisprudence pertaining to the right to food. In addition to judicial remedy, the review also covers non-judicial means of remedy against the violation of food rights. Finally, the review also offers a set of concrete recommendations, touching upon a wide range of aspects of the human right to adequate food.

Draft Law on Right to Food to be discussed at the Mexican Senate

The motion was previously approved by unanimity in the
Chambers of Deputy

After being approved by unanimity, with 363 votes in favor, no votes against and no abstentions; the “Draft Law on the Right to Adequate Food” has been sent to the upper chamber to be discussed in coming months. The draft became the first bill of national scope in this matter approved by a legislative branch in Mexico, an important step towards the regulation of the right to adequate food, enshrined in the Constitution since 2012.

Briefs on the right to food in Guatemala and Nicaragua

Caritas Guatemala and Caritas Nicaragua presented in Managua and Guatemala City a study on the implementation of the Voluntary Guidelines to Support the Progressive Realization of the Right to Adequate Food in the Context of National Food Security (Right to Food Guidelines) in both countries. Also in Guatemala, the Social Collective for the Right to Food published its Alternative brief on the right to food in Guatemala, published annually since it started its activities in 2007.

Presentation of the book “Right to food: theoretical and practical approaches for discussion”

The book Right to food: theoretical and practical approaches for discussion edited by Olga Cecilia Restrepo-Yepes and Cesar Augusto Molina Saldarriaga and written by the Observatory of the Right to Food in Latin America and the Caribbean (ODA-ALC), compile a series of articles stemming from the first call for research of the Observatory carried out in 2011. The chosen studies were written in light of the Hunger-Free Latin America and the Caribbean Initiative 2025 and were financed and technically supported by FAO, the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation and Development (AECID) and by the selected universities.

28th Regular Session Human Rights Council

During the 28th Session of the Human Rights Council (1–28 March 2015) a lot of issues and debates related to the right to food had been discussed.  In particular, OHCHR invited FAO to join the Annual Discussions on Climate Change, on a special panel aimed at linking climate change and impacts on the right to food. While, the Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, Ms. Hilal Elver, presented her first annual report, focused on the legal obstacles faced in the achievement of the right to food, as well as examples on good practices as a means of encouraging States to develop judicial remedies in accordance with the Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.

Launch of "Advances and obstacles in the implementation of the Right to Food Guidelines – The case of El Salvador"

On March 4th, the FAO office in El Salvador and its counterpart, CONASAN, organized a National Forum on the right to food that provided an opportunity for the country, based on an inter-institutional outlook and a State vision, to gather a wide range of institutions which have been contributing to this human right and saw the need for coordination to further improve. The Forum provided the opportunity to launch "Advances and obstacles in the implementation of the Voluntary Guidelines to Support the Progressive Realization of the Right to Adequate Food in the Context of National Food Security – The case of El Salvador", which systematize and communicate advances and challenges of the State related to the substantive application of the Right to Food Guidelines in light of the retrospective process for the tenth anniversary and the 41st session of the Committee on World Food Security.

Bolivia approves a School Feeding Law, an important step towards the fulfillment of the human right to adequate food

As part of its strategy to achieve food sovereignty, the government of Bolivia approves a new law to regulate complimentary school meals and to foster a social economy by means of produces purchased from local producers.
Law No 622 on School Feeding in the Framework of Food Sovereignty and Plural Economy, approved by the Plurinational Legislative Assembly, aims to contribute to educational performance and promote the permanence of students in the educational entities of the Plurinational Education System, through a safe, opportune and culturally appropriated diet.

Human Rights Day: Consolidating the Right to Food history

As 2014 marks a decade since the adoption of the Right to Food Guidelines, FAO has taken advantage of the opportunity to lead a series of activities to raise awareness of the Guidelines and the right to adequate food, highlight the achievements and gaps in their implementation and reaffirm the commitment to implement them. In concluding this year of activities and to mark Human Rights Day, the FAO Right to Food Team is launching two important elements: 7 Thematic Studies as well as the Right to Food Timeline.
