Human Rights Day: Consolidating the Right to Food history

As 2014 marks a decade since the adoption of the Right to Food Guidelines, FAO has taken advantage of the opportunity to lead a series of activities to raise awareness of the Guidelines and the right to adequate food, highlight the achievements and gaps in their implementation and reaffirm the commitment to implement them. In concluding this year of activities and to mark Human Rights Day, the FAO Right to Food Team is launching two important elements: 7 Thematic Studies as well as the Right to Food Timeline.

Postage stamps "For the Right to Food" in the Dominican Republic

The Dominican Postal Institute launched an issuance of postage stamps under the motto "For the Right to Food" at the Mirador de Santo Domingo Cultural Centre, on the occasion of the World Food Day. The stamps were presented during the prize awarding ceremony to the young winners of the National Contest of Drawings for Illustrating Stamps for the Right to Food, organized by the Chamber of Deputies of the Dominican Republic.

CFS 41: Reaffirming the importance of the Right to Food Guidelines

The 41st session of the Committee on Food Security (CFS) provided the opportunity for some Member Countries (El Salvador, India and Jordan) to share their national experiences in implementing the Right to Food Guidelines, and for all CFS Member Countries, to reaffirm their commitment to implement the Right to Food Guidelines and strive for the realization of the right to adequate food of all in the years to come through the consensually adopted Decision Box “Right to Food – Ten Year Perspective”.

Review of the legislative framework and jurisprudence concerning the right to adequate food in Nepal

The FAO Right to Food Team, in collaboration with the FAO Development Law Branch and Office in Nepal, is pleased to announce the launch of the Review of the legislative framework and jurisprudence concerning the right to adequate food in Nepal. The review discusses overarching aspects of Nepalese law and jurisprudence dealing with this human right. It provides a critical assessment of constitutional as well as legislative provisions and offers a thorough analysis of Supreme Court jurisprudence pertaining to the right to food. In addition to judicial remedy, the review also covers non-judicial means of remedy against the violation of food rights. Finally, the review also offers a set of concrete recommendations, touching upon a wide range of aspects of the human right to adequate food.

Draft Law on Food Sovereignty and Food Security and Nutrition for the Right to Food approved by the Chamber of Deputies in the Dominican Republic

On 10 September 2014 the Dominican Chamber of Deputies approved by unanimity the Draft Law on Food Sovereignty and Food Security and Nutrition for the Right to Food. (Iniciativa No.04976-2010-2016-CD - “Proyecto de ley sobre Soberanía y Seguridad Alimentaria y Nutricional por el derecho a la alimentación”.)

Technical Dialogue on 10 Years of the Implementation of the Right to Food Guidelines

In the context of a communication and advocacy campaign carried out by FAO to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the adoption of the Voluntary Guidelines to Support the Progressive Realization of the Right to Adequate Food in the Context of National Food Security (Right to Food Guidelines), a Technical Dialogue on the 10 year Retrospective of the Implementation of the Right to Food Guidelines was organized on 3 July 2014 at FAO premises in Rome.

New UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food appointed

In May 2014 the Human Right Council appointed Ms Hilal Elver as the new United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food (UNSR). Ms Elver, who assumed her functions on 2 June 2014, is a Research Professor, and co-director of the Project on Global Climate Change, Human Security, and Democracy housed at the Orfalea Center for Global & International Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Towards the 10th anniversary of the adoption of the Right to Food Guidelines

Dear Right to Food Supporters, 2014 marks ten years since the adoption of the “Voluntary Guidelines to Support the Progressive Realization of the Right to Adequate Food in the Context of National Food Security” (Right to Food Guidelines) in 2004. In its 39th session held in October 2012, the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) called for a session in 2014, to review a 10 Years Retrospective of the Implementation of the Right to Food Guidelines (CFS 39 Item VIII, para 21d).
