UN Human Rights Council Will Hold Special Session on the World Food Crisis
The Human Rights Council will hold a Special Session on "the negative impact on the realization of the right to food of the worsening world food crisis, caused inter alia by the soaring food prices", in Geneva on Friday, 23 May. The request of a special session was approved by 41 of the Council's 47 member states. This will be the Human Rights Council’s first special session ever on a thematic issue. It will provide the opportunity to examine an urgent human rights issue at the international level.
Olivier De Schutter, the new UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, prepared a background note on the world food crisis. More information on this is available on the following website http://www2.ohchr.org/english/issues/food/index.htm
