FAO Special Event 2006: Overview

The Right to Food Unit hosted a Special Even on Implementation of the Human Right to Food during the 32nd session of the Committee on World Food Security.

  Delegates from more than 20 countries attended to share national approaches on implementing the Right.

  The information fair featured resource materials from Governments, UN agencies and civil society organization on tools for advancing the Right to Food. The main themes of the information stands reflected the major entry points for the Right to Food into development projects and policies.

  Two panel discussions featured Government representatives and civil society representatives discussing The Right Environment: The human right to food and the question of political commitment and Making the right to food happen at the country and community level.

  Special Advisor to the Director General, Herve Lejeune who chaired both panel discussions said, "The Right to Food specifically obligates governments to ensure, without discrimination, the capability of all individuals within their borders to produce or procure adequate quantities and quality of food for an active and healthy life".

  Delegates also agreed to form a multi-lingual Global Network on the Right to Food . The network gives those promoting the Right to Food around the world a forum to exchange knowledge, lobby and mobilize efforts towards the realization of the Right.
