Working towards a balanced and inclusive Green Economy: A United Nations System-wide Perspective 4 June 2012 The EMG’s Issue Management Group on Green Economy was tasked to prepare a report to assess how the United Nations system could coherently support countries in transitioning to a green economy. The report is expected to facilitate a common understanding of the green economy approach and the measures required for the transition. The report is also envisioned to contribute to the preparatory process for the 2012 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD or Rio+20) where “the green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication” is one of the two themes. State of the World’s Forests. 2011 4 June 2012 The ninth biennial issue of State of the World’s Forests, published at the outset of 2011, the International Year of Forests, considers the theme ‘Changing pathways, changing lives: forests as multiple pathways to sustainable development’. It takes a holistic view of the multiple ways in which forests support livelihoods. The chapters assembled for this year’s State of the World’s Forests highlight four key areas that warrant greater attention: regional trends on forest resources; the development of sustainable forest industries; climate change mitigation and adaptation; and the local value of forests. Considered together, these themes provide insights on the true contribution of forests to the creation of sustainable livelihoods and alleviation of poverty. [more]
FAO-ILO Guidelines for addressing child labour in fisheries and aquaculture: Policy and practice – Preliminary version 4 June 2012 This report is a preliminary version of the FAO-ILO Good practice guide for addressing child labour in fisheries and aquaculture: policy and practice . The document has been prepared within the framework of a current Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and international Labour Organization (ILO) collaboration on decent work and child labour in the food and agriculture sector. It is based on the outcomes and recommendations of the FAO-ILO workshop on child labour in fisheries and aquaculture that was held in 2010 and responds to a need to better understand and address child labour in this sector. Guidance on how to address rural employment and decent work concerns in FAO country activities 4 June 2012 This guidance document will: Introduce the concepts of rural employment and decent work (RE&DW). Acknowledge the centrality of RE&DW for the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Affirm FAO's comparative advantages in dealing with RE&DW and identify the main areas of intervention Provide a summary of the results of FAO's Self-Assessment on Employment and Decent Work Suggest examples of concrete actions that FAO country offices could consider to promote RE&DW within their existing work programmes Encourage the creation of links with International Labour Organization (ILO) field offices and facilitate partnerships and the identification of synergies. Green Jobs for a Revitalized Food and Agriculture Sector 4 June 2012 This report presents an overview of opportunities to create “green jobs” by encouraging and investing in the implementation of a global transformation of the agriculture sector into a sustainable, productive and environmentally balanced ‘green agriculture’ paradigm. In the context of this report, “green agriculture” is broadly defined as “the use of farming practices and technologies that simultaneously: (i) maintain and increase farm productivity and profitability while ensuring the provision of food on a sustainable basis, (ii) reduce negative externalities and gradually lead to positive ones, and (iii) rebuild ecological resources (i.e. soil, water, air and biodiversity “natural capital” assets) by reducing pollution and using resources more efficiently. A diverse, locally adaptable set of agricultural techniques, practices and market branding certifications such as Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), Organic/Biodynamic Agriculture, Conservation Agriculture and related techniques and food-supply protocols represent the various forms of “green” agriculture” (UNEP, Green Economy Report: Agriculture Investing in Natural Capital. 2011). Fishery and forestry are also mentioned, but with a lower level of detail. This is due to the nature of interventions needed to support a transition to greener fishery and forestry, which primarily focuses on resource conservation and the rebuilding of stocks. [more]
