Since 2003 the UN has designated 11 December as the International Mountain Day. In 2007 theme will focus on climate change: “Facing Change: Climate Change in Mountain Areas”.

FAO, in collaboration with various partners, particularly the Centre for Development and the Environment (CDE) in Switzerland, is preparing communication materials to highlight thematic issues, suggest ways in which countries can celebrate the Day and facilitate action. This includes an information note on the management of climate change, which will draw on specific examples of practical action to reduce or mitigate negative impacts of climate change, and on cases where opportunities have arisen from the positive impacts of climate change.
