The UN has designated 11 December as the International Mountain Day and this year’s theme, "Sustainable Tourism for Poverty Alleviation in Mountain Areas", will provide a unique opportunity to increase awareness, to enhance solidarity and to promote concerted action for sustainable tourism -- particularly at the country level. On 30 November 2005, a special event entitled "Mountain Tourism: Making it work for the poor" is being organized by the FAO and the Government of Italy. This special International Mountain Day event at FAO will allow for the sharing of experiences about how to develop sustainable tourism in mountain areas.
