Food loss reduction strategy development on favour of smallholder producers in Africa - Phase 1: Regional validation workshop

This validation workshop is organized in the framework of a project entitled ‘Food loss reduction strategy development in favour of smallholder producers in Africa Phase 1’ launched in 2014. It is funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and implemented by FAO in eleven (Angola, Botswana, Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Kenya, Namibia, Rwanda, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe) African countries in partnership with respective Ministries of Agriculture.

The validation workshop will present findings from loss assessment studies that have been conducted along supply chains for a range of different commodities, including maize, millet, potato, legumes and horticulture.

Workshop Objectives

  1. A broader understanding of the causes of food losses, their magnitude and socio-economic impact.
  2. Identification of strategies and practical solutions to reduce food losses.
  3. Agreement on the way forward to develop a programme on the reduction of food losses (Phase 2).

Workshop format

The meeting will take the form of presentations and participatory discussions. Group and plenary sessions will aim to identify and prioritise short to medium term strategies and solutions for reduction of food losses in key food supply chains.

Participants (by invitation only)

Participants will include members of the teams who conducted the loss assessments (generally from universities and research institutes), government officials, private sector representatives, regional and sub-regional organizations including African Union, COMESA etc., development partners and FAO officers.
