Side Event: Food Loss and Waste platform
During Turkey’s G20 Presidency, FAO supported Development Working Group for drafting G20 Agriculture Ministers’ Communiqué and the Implementation Plan of the G20 Food Security and Nutrition Framework. The extent of food loss and waste was highlighted as "a global problem of enormous economic, environmental and societal significance" and all G20 members are encouraged to strengthen their efforts to address it. Director General of FAO Mr Graziano da Silva stated the reduction of food loss and waste is a good objective for G20 collective action and that the G20 can provide global leadership in this regard.
As a result of G20 action plan on food security and sustainable food systems, the G20 Platform on Measurement and Reduction of Food Loss and Waste was launched 4 December at a special event at the side of the 153rd Council of the FAO.
Objectives:
- Support the Platform on Measurement and Reduction of Food Loss and Waste as it is an important part of the G20 Action Plan on Food Security and Sustainable Food Systems and contribute to the global initiative on food loss and waste reduction.
- Create awareness on the platform and encourage active participation of member countries to this platform
- Sharing of key activities implemented at national level with other counties as success story
