SAVE FOOD: Global Initiative on Food Loss and Waste Reduction

The European Week for Waste Reduction

21 - 29 November 2015 

On the occasion of the European Week for Waste Reductions 2015 (EWWR), the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) decided to raise awareness among the staff of the dramatic issue of food waste.  The programme for this year includes several activities such as a photo competition on the thematic of food waste and a film projection on the same issue. To inaugurate the photo exhibition, a cocktail has been organized which will be made from leftovers.

The EWWR is an occasion to increase staff awareness of food waste and in particular of the food donation programme which has been recently introduced in the organisation.  This project leaded by the EESC and the CoR (Committee of the Regions) in collaboration with two charities based in Brussels allows to donate some buffets leftovers to people who live in poverty.

These concrete activities help strengthen the policy messages of the EESC and its Permanent Study Group on food security, which has repeatedly called for action at EU level to prevent and reduce food waste and to facilitate food donation.
