SAVE FOOD: Global Initiative on Food Loss and Waste Reduction

Official launch of the SAVE FOOD Initiative on the Russian market

24 - 27 January 2017
Moscow, Russia

UPAKOVKA 2017 will see the launch of the SAVE FOOD Initiative on the Russian market.

The problem of food waste is in Russia at least as big as in other industrialized countries, but the awareness about the implications of the problem is low, and consequentially not much action is being taken to reduce food waste.

Considering the size of Russia and its proportional contribution to ghg emission and climate change, as well as the known significant share of food waste in this problem, there would be high positive impact if food waste could be reduced by half (according to SDG 12.3). It would significantly support Russia’s efforts to comply with the agreements reached in COP21.

In September 2016 the FAO-LOR office organized a number of meetings with Russian stakeholders in the food systems who are interested in the topic of FLW.

Feedback from the stakeholders was focused on environmental/ natural resource dimension of FLW, as well as sophisticated technology to preserve food.

It is very timely that now Messe Düsseldorf, as FAO’s main private sector partner in the SAVE FOOD Initiative, together with FAO-LOR organizes a seminar at the yearly Upakovka (Interpack) trade fair to discuss the topic of FLW, and to launch the SAVE FOOD Initiative in Russia.
